in the early 2000s, a mature Italian industrial group decided to invest in the solar energy sector by developing innovative solutions in close collaboration with a public research centre. After a few years, the group decided to spin out their growing business activity and founded a new company; today it is a world leader in the solar energy market.
THE POWER OF INDUSTRY CLUSTERS AS A DRIVER OF OPEN INNOVATION COLLABORATIONS
During the 2008-2009 financial crisis, a mature Italian SME which had been successful in the wellness sector was obliged to diversify its product offering to capture a new niche market. Thanks to the support offered by the local lighting cluster as part of an FP7 coordination action, Fairwind joined forces with another SME with complementary skills to develop a new product. During their open innovation journey the companies were able to engage the services of different local innovation service providers.
HARNESSING THE BENEFITS OF OPEN INNOVATION TO ADVANCE SOCIAL INNOVATION
SEATRAC is a unique device that helps people with physical disabilities to go swimming in the sea autonomously, easily and safely. It is the successful outcome of a collaborative project between a university laboratory, local government and the end-users' community, which was able to leverage technology, engineering knowledge and user experience inputs to design, validate and launch the innovation.
